Tattoo's Bring Spontaneity to the 14th Annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF)!!!
Tattoo's Bring Spontaneity
to the 14th Annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF)!!!
DENVER - This years event was expanded to three days, with the Brewer's Dinner kicking off the festivities on the evening of October 4th. In addition, those crazy RealBeer Guys (check out their web page "http://realbeer.com/") sponsored the first annual Stogie & Stout Festival at Broadway Brewing Company's 16th St. Mall location in Denver after the dinner. There was quite a bit of fun and comradery being had with the brewer's, judge's, and media people getting together with other people they had not seen in a year to catch up on what had been happening over the course of the year. "This is sure to become a tradition with the start of each year's new festival", says company stogie expert Steve Rickman!!!
The festival ran from 5:30 to 9:30pm each night,
and since this was the first year that the GABF had expanded to three days, the crowd was
lighter than expected on Thursday evening. However, this gave the company beer guru, Troy
Paski, a chance to visit and sample some of the other brewer's products, and "with
over 300 breweries in attendance, it was hard to visit with all of them; not too mention
the task of attempting to try over 1300 different beers", says Troy... On a more
entertaining note, the road crew from the T.ROY Brewing Company brought some
of their recently field tested Hoppy Face(TM) tattoo's
for real applicating!!! Robert Helms, now known as the master applicator in the Denver
metro area, had a blast putting them on thousands of festival attendees! Not only that,
but Robert even managed to share the responsibility of tattooing with the volunteer's over
the course of the three day event...
Friday afternoon was the first time the GABF had an industry only (i.e., distributors, manufacturer's, and etc.) showing from 1:00 to 4:00. This gave the Hoppy Team a chance to meet and talk one-on-one to some visiting distributor's who were interested in carrying the Hoppy Face in their area, and without having to deal with a large crowd at the same time. Because of this showing, it has now resulted in Hoppy Face being available in Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado! The evening show was very busy, and the tattoo's that the team brought with them were being received with a lot of energy and excitement! "Last year we had stickers, this year tattoo's, so I am not real sure what we will do next year to create another unique experience for everyone; but I am sure it will be fun", says company president Troy Paski! "Anyway, you just have to witness firsthand the energy generated with 20,000 people in a hall, and with over 300 breweries", concludes Troy as he finishes tattooing a young lady!!!
Saturday afternoon was the annual medal presentation and ceremony, which is almost Olympic like in nature, and "why shouldn't it be, since this is the largest beer festival in the country", quotes company promotions director Robert Helms! After a short break before the evenings event, and a little film developing, the team and their volunteer's were once again ready for the onslaught of beer pouring and tattooing! As seen on the front page, one of T.ROY's hard working volunteer's (aka Sonny) for Saturday's event, was caught with her tattoo in place, and with a sweat-tart necklace that apparently needed some assistance... Lucky guy!!!
Next year, this festival will be held a week earlier (i.e., Sept27-Sept30) so you should mark your calendars now, and prepare to spend a little extra time in the Denver/Boulder area to experience firsthand what is happening in this industry on the front range in Colorado; that is if you truly love beer!!!
Santa Barbara gets
"Happy on Hoppy"(TM)
SANTA BARBARA - The second annual Pacific Coast Beer Festival, held October 21st, in Santa Barbara featured over 60 different breweries, and ran from noon until a little after 6:00pm. This festival had all of the breweries primarily divided up by geographic locations. There was an international section inside the pavilion, along with sections outside for the great northwest, one specifically set aside for those "national" beers like Petes and Sams, one for southern California, one for central California, and finally one for northern California. Unfortunately, the sun never came out on Saturday, which made hanging out in the international pavilion a rather attractive proposition!
The Hoppy Crew, featuring JoANN Guercio on her first away mission, had a great location for hearing/seeing the musical entertainment all day; not too mention the fact that they were right in the center of one long row of breweries, which gave them easy access to all of people in attendance. In addition, with the crew being fresh out of tattoos from the GABF, they found that they had already garnered a much heralded reputation for having fun when they had several requests from various people to be tattooed!
Finally, it seems as though the good beer scene has caught on in southern California, and there was definitely a lot of interest for the ol Hoppy Face. All the brew crew needs to do now, is figure out how to make enough beer so that southern California can "Get Happy on Hoppy"(TM)... Also, if you are coming from the Bay Area, do not forget to stop for lunch on the way home at the San Luis Obispo Brewing Company.

SAN JOSE - Sam's BBQ, located at 1110 S. Bascom Avenue in San Jose, is one of the best kept secret's in the San Jose area! Sam, perfecting his BBQ out at the Flea Market, has been in business now for almost four years, and is fast becoming a local legend for producing GREAT BBQ!! Sam, and his wife Adila, have a cozy little "dining room" type location where the sounds of cattle riding the rails can be heard from the overhead train that circles the room. Not only is Sam's meat some of the most juiciest BBQ the Hoppy Crew has ever tasted, where they show up occasionally for one of their weekly staff meetings, but they have all tried to bribe Sam for the recipe to his secret sauce!!! According to Sam, when one of the brew crew tells him what they put in the Hoppy Face, he will tell them what is in his sauce; it seems like both parties will have to be satisfied with knowing their own speciality for now... In addition to excellent food, Sam has over 30 microbrewed beer's available in bottles to compliment his menu. His meals are very reasonably priced from $6.00 to $9.00, and they are open until 9:00pm most days. If you have a craving for juicy BBQ, and you are not quite sure where to go, then just go to Sam's; they will do the rest!!!

Safeway District #11
Easter Seal Benefit
SAN JOSE - Safeway District #11 held its second annual Wine & Beer Tasting on October 27th in the lobby of the Hilton Towers in downtown San Jose. There were about six micros, about 12 larger breweries, and a number of wineries there to support Safeway with the proceeds going to the Easter Seal Society of the Bay Area. With a silent auction, great hors doeuvres, and some members of the NFL in attendance for the evening; not to mention a lot of the Safeway family, everyone left the party having had a real blast!!!
-The Micro Blues & Brews in Fairfield, on September 16th, was like spending 5 hours in a wind tunnel with Great Music and lots of people consuming GREAT beer!!!
-The Founder's Day Festival in Willow Glen, on September 17th, went over pretty good with everybody, and there brother, asking us when we're going to be open for business! Andy gets major bonus points for spending all day manning the "box", and giving the locals what they wanted!!! The final results have been tabulated, and it appears that there's a few thousand VERY thirsty Glenites out there with no place to go to relieve their everyday stresses...
-The Almaden Art & Wine (turning into a microbrew) Festival in San Jose was pretty relaxing, not to mention well organized, on September 17th. The Women's Club was very pleased with our beer and have already invited us back for next year's festival! Special thanks goes to JoANN, Robert, Bob, and Dorothy for assisting with the promoting of Hoppy Face in the Almaden area of San Jose!!!
-The Taste of Morgan Hill last weekend, on September 23 & 24, did not have the turnout that the Chamber had expected, but Steve, along with volunteers from the local Chamber of Commerce, had a lot of fun turning new people onto Hoppy Face anyway. Steve gets major bonus points for coordinating and ensuring this festival ran very smoothly!!!
